So I took a look at my new schedule at Sony and it makes me laugh… I am laughing because if I don’t laugh, I might cry…
When I applied and interviewed, I made it perfectly clear that I did not want to work more than 20 hours per week… I even followed up on the interview with a phone call to confirm that they understood that I only wanted to work 20 hours per week… When the manager called to give me the job, I reminded him that I only wanted to work 20 hours per week…
This week, my first week on the job, I told the manager that I would work 25 hours to allow for training and to compensate for the fact that they have not hired to fill either of the TWO Concierge positions… I told him that since it was my first week, the new job energy would carry me through and make it so I don’t get burned out too quickly…
So, they put the new schedule up yesterday…
Sunday — 2 PM – 10 PM
Monday — OFF
Tuesday — 5 PM – 10 PM
Wednesday — OFF
Thursday — 5 PM – 10 PM
Friday — 5 PM – 10 PM
Saturday — 4 PM – 10 PM
Now, keep in mind that we usually don’t get out of the store til 10:30 PM — which means that I am looking at 31.5 hours next week… That is in addition to my normal 40 hour per week job… OUCH!!! I realize that it is kind of my own fault, but I think that they are taking advantage of my good-nature…
Now one of the issues that stands in the way of me getting fewer hours is the fact that I am the ONLY Concierge they have… which means that when I am not in the store, someone has to be off of the salesfloor, which is bad…
The trick to hiring a Concierge is that I don’t think most people are cut out for it… It is somewhat boring and tedious because you HAVE to stay behind the desk, but at the same time you have to be alert and top of everyone in the store… I am the hub of communication, so whenever anyone is taking a break or leaving the salesfloor, they have to let me know… I have to make sure that people are taking their lunches and I have to make sure that everyone in the store is being helped… If I see a customer who hasn’t been approached, I need to get on the radio and tell a salesperson that they need to go over there… If the store is not busy, I need to make sure that the associates are cleaning or restocking or something — not just chatting with each other… I also have to be in control of my area — no one is supposed to come behind the Concierge desk and I have to enforce that rule, which makes me look like a bitch, but oh well! At the end of the night, I have to tell people what their cleaning jobs will be so we can get out on time and I need to to do a pre-walk-through to make sure that the jobs all got done… And on top of all that control-freak duty, I have to be pleasant and personable and warm and friendly to every customer that enters or leaves our store… I have to smile and be genuine and pay attention to everyone who comes in the door…
That is why this job is not going to be easy to fill… You have to be able to multi-task like crazy, keep your wits about you, keep a positive attitude, be a control-freak and make sure that people are sticking to store policies… I don’t think that I have the intestinal fortitude to do this job full-time unless they were paying me more… If anyone reading this has aspirations of being a full-time concierge at the Sony Style store, think long and hard about what the job duties are and ask for a lot of money… I think that they mis-represent the job when they interview for it, so hopefully the people that they hire for the position are flexible…
I think I will write up a job description tonight… Maybe that will help them find some suitable candidates and allow me to NOT work 2 full time jobs.
